Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine particularly concerned with the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive system. These disorders may affect the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), rectum, liver, gallbladder, pancreas or biliary system.
Diseases of the liver fall under the branch of hepatology, which is traditionally classified as a sub-specialty of gastroenterology.
Gastroenterologists are physicians (medical doctors) who specialize in the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive system. Some Gastroenterologists further specialize in treating people in certain age groups, such as pediatric gastroenterologists, who only treat children.
